Synopsis: Moving from the heart of Brighton and Hove to the Sussex countryside is a big undertaking for Ollie and Caro Harcourt and their twelve-year-old daughter Jade. But when they view Cold Hill House – a huge, dilapidated Georgian mansion – Ollie is filled with excitement. Despite the financial strain of the move, he has dreamed of living in the country since he was a child, and he sees Cold Hill House, with its acres of land, as a paradise for his animal-loving daughter, the perfect base for his web-design business and a terrific long-term investment. Caro is less certain, and Jade is grumpy about being separated from her friends.
Within days of moving in, it becomes apparent that the Harcourt family aren’t the only residents of the house. A friend of Jade’s is the first to see the spectral woman, standing behind her as the girls talk on FaceTime. Then there are more sightings, as well as increasingly disturbing occurrences in the house. As the haunting becomes more malevolent and the house itself begins to turn on the Harcourts, the terrified family discover Cold Hill House’s dark history, and the horrible truth of what it could mean for them . . . Synopsis: In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.
But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.
On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.
But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it’s up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth. Continue reading “All Systems Red – Martha Wells”
Synopsis: River of Teeth is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe. It is the story of Winslow Houndstooth and his crew. It is the story of their fortunes. It is the story of his revenge.
Holly: This book was a trip! You’ve got these hungry, hungry hippos (RAWR) who are being imported into the marshes of the Mississippi River for meat production. A portion of them are used as mounts, but then there is an overpopulation happening of murderous rampaging ferals. So then you’ve got this ragtag crew of mercenaries who are most certainly *not* on a caper, who are then called in to help clean up the waterways of these ferals.
It was such a fun & unique adventure story. There were shades of Joe R. Lansdale & Unforgiven, with a completely bonkers (in a good way) alternate history thrown in for good measure. Continue reading “River of Teeth – Sarah Gailey”

The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne reaches its epic conclusion as war engulfs the Annurian Empire. Continue reading “The Last Mortal Bond – Brian Staveley”
In the instant before he’d risen from the bunker, he’d questioned his own wisdom: How might he separate the will of the Force from his will, his ego, demanding action where action was unneeded? But there was no doubt in his heart now. The Force expressed itself through simplicity, and all it asked of him was to walk.
I am one with the Force and the Force is with me.
Well fuck. Just when I think I am finally emotionally stable enough to delve in before watching the movie again, this. THIS. I devoured this like the masochist I am! Continue reading “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Alexander Freed”
